A little “How it’s done” from a recent shoot.

Sometimes I like to throw some information out into the world hoping it will help another photographer somewhere along the way. This recent shoot for a group of FIT visual presentation students was a blast. We did the work at the beautiful Mill Neck Manor on Long island, and I must say that this team is dedicated, professional and very talented. As per my usual location light choice you will see the Profoto 7B connected to a Pro B head with a Photek umbrella for diffusion. Normally i would not have used the Photek, but i did not have my normal Profoto 5′ Giant reflector with me. The Photek is extremely inexpensive and lightweight. This shoot was the first, and last time I used it. One solid gust of wind took the light stand to the ground compromising the umbrella forever. Also seen is a new addition to the collection of light control toys, the California Sunbounce Sun-Swatter Mini. California Sunbounce has created this most amazing tool to help gobo (block out) the harsh rays of the sun, allowing you to shape the light on your subject however you choose while maintaining enough light to mix the ambient into the image and give you superb exposure control. Below you will find one behind the scenes image of the setup, and one final image for each of two locations that day.

Rejected Images from Spatial Awareness project

For my newest project, which I have entitled “Spatial Awareness”, I shot approximately six rolls of Kodak Portra 160 through A Hasselblad 501c. My initial edit of the 72 frames captured resulted in a tight edit of 21 images, which was later edited to a final 10. The 11 images shown here are the un-chosen files from the first edit down to 21. The next posting will include the final 10 images chosen for the project.

This is my first venture in video, the entire film was shot in about two hours. Editing took a little longer considering I had to teach myself final cut to produce it.

In the middle of writing tonight, I became the slightest bit distracted and decided to go digging through my images from a recent shoot with Molly “Fletchasketch” Fletcher. Coming across a few strobe firing mishaps I tripped over my mouse, hit my head and slipped into full digital artist mode for a few moments. This is the result.
